Builders' malpractices - letter turned into PIL

A letter by a Thane resident to the Bombay High Court listing how builder-developers indulge in alleged malpractices when selling flats has been converted into a public interest litigation, Indian Express reported while the Loksatta identified the entities as Lodha, Diwan, Hiranandani, HDIL, Conwood, Runwal, Ajmera and Kaplataru who have projects in Mumbai and Thane..

The complainant, Vikrant Karnik, sent a CD of a sting operation conducted by a television channel (name not indicated) and pointed out how instead of carpet, they super built-up areas, with a load of up to 45 per cent, is made the basis for sale. The parking areas , ducts and flower beds (but incorporated into the flats to make them appear spacious) are sold, according to the reports.

Karnik had written to the High Court on October 16 last year and on January 30, the registrar (Judicial II) informed him that when placed before Justice DY Chandrachud, it was converted into a PIL
