72% of Thane buildings illegal

Three out of four buildings in Thane City are "illegal", Times of India reported today, citing Thane Municipal Corporation's official statistics and Maharashtra Times pointed out that they include buildings which have had commencement certificates but have not secured occupation certificates from the civic body.

The list includes those which did not have even commencement certificates as well as the ones categorized as slums across Thane City. The illegal buildings are required to pay twice the normal property taxes and water charges, thus adding substantial sums to the city coffers.

As a proportion of the total number of buildings, they account for 72 per cent, and in absolute numbers, 2.79 lakh structures. They yield a revenue of Rs 200 cr out of the total Rs 253 cr blled by the civic body.

This shows a planned, institutionalized racket. The numbers are the proof. While the higher yield could be a solace to the civic body, it would be interesting to know how much went into the pockets of civic officials and politicians to enable such structures in the city.
